Representation of Ulama in the Buya Hamka’s Movie: Analysis of the Construction of Buya Hamka's Character as an Ulama

This research aims to analyze the representation of ulama (Islamic scholars) in Buya Hamka’s movie and identify the construction of the character Buya Hamka as an ulama figure. The method used is qualitative research with a narrative analysis approach. The data used in this study is the Buya Hamka’s movie released in 2023. The research analyzes the narration, dialogue, actions, and appearance of the character Buya Hamka in the movie. The findings of the study indicate that the character Buya Hamka in this movie is represented as a revered, wise, and influential ulama in society. Buya Hamka's physical appearance in the movie portrays an aged figure with a white beard and traditional attire that is distinctive. His dialogues demonstrate wisdom and sagacity in providing religious advice to his followers. Additionally, Buya Hamka is also portrayed as a committed individual in the pursuit of justice and truth. The construction of this character is built through the use of strong and captivating language, as well as a firm stance in upholding religious principles. Despite facing conflicts and challenges in the movie, Buya Hamka always manages to overcome them wisely while maintaining his integrity as an ulama. The findings of this research indicate that Buya Hamka’s movie successfully portrays Buya Hamka as a charismatic ulama figure with significant influence in society. This representation provides inspiration and recognition for the role of the ulama in preserving religious values and morality amidst changing times. The study offers new insights into how movies depict ulama in a cinematic context and the construction of the character Buya Hamka as an ulama figure.
