Journal History

Originating from discussion forums and scientific concerns about Islamic family law and the means to publish these ideas, Legitima: Jurnal Keluarga Hukum Islam (Legitima: Journal of Islamic Family Law) was born. Legitima is a journal published by the Tribakti Lirboyo Islamic Institute in Kediri, Indonesia (currently, Tribakti Lirboyo Islamic University). Its history began with academic concerns about the need for an academic platform focused on the study of Islamic family law, which is central to human life. The establishment of Legitima: Journal of Islamic Family Law was driven by the need to promote research, analysis, and academic discussion on Islamic family law and various contemporary issues.

First published in 2018, Legitima initially emerged as a progressive publication platform and an important forum for academics, legal practitioners, and scholars of Islamic family law to share their research findings and ideas. The journal aims to provide a space for researchers to develop new ideas, foster critical thinking, and promote a better understanding of issues in Islamic family law. Over time, Legitima has continued to evolve and become widely recognized in Islamic family law and related topics. Articles published in Legitima cover a variety of approaches and perspectives, reflecting the diversity of thought and efforts of academics in the field of Islamic family law.

In its early publications, Legitima aimed to expand its reach to national readers and gradually began to expand its international readership by using titles, abstracts, and keywords in English. And at the beginning of Vol. 6 No. 1 (2023), Legitima is committed to consistently expanding its international reach by publishing manuscripts that are entirely in English.

Legitima continues to strive to increase its impact through indexing at the national and international levels. Since November 13, 2024, Legitima has been accredited by SINTA (Indonesian National Journal Index) with a level 4 rating based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education, Research, and Technology, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia, Number 177/E/Kpt/2024 concerning the Assessment of Scientific Journal Accreditation for Period II of 2024. Legitima continues to strive to improve the quality of its publications and reach a wider audience. By early 2024, it was indexed by leading indexing agencies such as the DOAJ.

Legitima is increasingly recognized internationally, with many authors affiliated outside Indonesia showing interest in publishing their best manuscripts in the journal. This can be seen in the publication of the volume. 7 No. 1 (2024), where all articles were written by authors from seven countries (Indonesia, Türkiye, India, Malaysia, Tunisia, Libya, and Lebanon). Vol. 7 No. 2 (2025) features articles written by authors from 13 countries (Indonesia, India, Türkiye, Malaysia, Libya, Egypt, Tunisia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany, Hungary, the United Kingdom, Poland, and Australia). Vol. 8 No. 1 (2025) features articles written by authors from nine countries (the United Kingdom, Hungary, Türkiye, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Russian Federation, Nigeria, Morocco, and Egypt). Given Legitima’s rapid growth and achievements, the editorial team is increasingly motivated to improve the journal’s quality and impact.

Therefore, at the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026, Legitima is applying for reputable international indexing by Scopus to expand the positive impact of the journal in the study of Islamic family law, both theoretically and practically. This effort aims to benefit not only national authors and readers but also international authors and readers.
